The social media platform X, previously called Twitter and often referred to as a microblogging site, has taken a different path since being acquired by the world's richest person, Elon Musk, for a staggering USD 44 billion.

On Friday, Elon Musk announced that X, previously known as Twitter, had reached the top spot as the number one news app on the App Store in India. He shared the update through a post on X, stating, "X is now number 1 for news in India."

The news was first shared by the X handle Dogedesigner, which stated, "BREAKING: X is now the top news app on the App Store in India." The handle also introduced a new feature on X, saying, "BREAKING: You can now rewind a live video on X."

The company's direction has significantly shifted. Nevertheless, Elon Musk has consistently promoted it as an alternative news source.

According to category-wise ratings, X holds the top position in India. The Elon Musk-owned platform is followed by another American social media site, Reddit. In third place is Dainik Bhaskar, one of India's largest newspapers.

As per Statista.com, India ranks third in the world for the number of X users, with over 25 million users.

Following the announcement that X has become the number one news app on the App Store in India, Musk's followers expressed their admiration for the platform.

One user, Hitman Hub, commented, "X has claimed the No.1 spot in Australia! Big love down under X is No. 1 in Germany! Feeling blessed to have reached the top here. X is now No. 1 in Brazil! Thank you for all the amazing energy, Brazil X takes the No. 1 spot in India! Incredible to see such love and support in India."

Another user, Raghu Rajaram, remarked, "Not sure of others, but I feel X has certainly changed the game against the usual polarised media owned and influenced by politicians! X breaks it first every time."

Another user added, "Now might be a good time to repay back by suspending racist accounts posting fake content about India. Or else it won't take too long to go down the Brazilian way."
