The first-ever Srinagar Open Mic, hosted by the newly formed Danish Manzoor Legacy Foundation, transformed Zero Bridge Rajbagh into a hub of creativity and cultural expression. This impromptu event brought together budding Kashmiri talents in poetry, music, rap, and stand-up comedy, leaving both locals and tourists captivated by the vibrant performances.
Aftab Hussain, a local, expressed his amazement: "I was walking by, crossing over to the other side of the old Zero Bridge, and I was so delighted to hear such melodious voices from Kashmir participating here. Instead of heading home, I stuck around for almost two hours to listen to this beautiful music. I hardly felt like I am in Kashmir. It was amazing."
Adding to the charm of the event, a tourist couple joined in the festivities with an impromptu dance. "It was such a beautiful moment, and we thought we were on the streets of Europe. As we heard the music, we thought of shaking a leg and dancing together as a couple. It became a memorable moment for us as this was our first trip to Kashmir," they shared.
The Srinagar Open Mic aims to provide a platform for Kashmiri artists to showcase their talents while fostering a sense of community and cultural pride. This event marked the foundation's first foray into public engagements and was met with overwhelming success.
Speaking about the initiative, Tanveer Hussain Khan, Director of the Danish Manzoor Legacy Foundation, said, "A bunch of youngsters approached us with the idea, and we thought that we must provide a platform to young artists in the Valley. As a proof of concept, we did this small impromptu event, and looking at its success, it is clear that the people have spoken. In the days to come, once we officially launch, more such events will be organized in the Valley, giving a platform to our artists, poets, singers, musicians, and art and craft workers."
The Danish Manzoor Legacy Foundation, founded by renowned international journalist Danish Manzoor, is dedicated to empowering communities and preserving cultural heritage in Jammu and Kashmir. Beyond the Srinagar Open Mic, the foundation plans to launch initiatives in skill development, education, renewable energy, and sustainable farming, among others.
Danish Manzoor's vision for the foundation stems from his commitment to nurturing talent and fostering meaningful change in the Valley. His extensive experience in journalism and global affairs positions him uniquely to drive these efforts.
Looking ahead, the Srinagar Open Mic will soon transition from impromptu events to a structured calendar, inviting registrations for both artists and audiences. This initiative sets the stage for a cultural renaissance in Kashmir, showcasing the immense potential of its youth and their ability to inspire through art and creativity.
