As organizations worldwide increasingly embrace artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML), finding skilled professionals in these fields has become a critical challenge, for the companies, according to the 2024 Skillsoft IT Skills & Salary Report.

Nearly 47% of IT decision-makers rank AI and ML as their top priorities, when it comes to talent sourcing. However, the talent acquisitions for positions requiring expertise in AI and ML are among the hardest to fill, and the companies struggling to get the right talent for the positions.

"The skills gap in AI and ML is widening," the report stated, "highlighting the urgent need for upskilling and reskilling initiatives within organizations."

The report reveals that while 41% of IT professionals find AI non-disruptive to their daily work, many view it as an enabler, helping systems run faster and more efficiently. Companies already integrating AI report greater confidence in its potential.

According to the report, the companies are emphasising more on training and certification and consider them as vital solutions. The report highlights the value of certifications, with 93% of IT professionals globally holding at least one certification.

The companies also consider certified employees as more productive, innovative, and faster at troubleshooting, while the report also states that the organisations are moving away from traditional degree requirements, focusing instead on demonstrated competencies. This shift, combined with investments in workforce development, positions companies to lead in AI-driven innovation.

The benefits are mutual: certified professionals report higher earning potential and better job opportunities, while employers experience improved efficiency and reduced risk of errors. Additionally, "soft skills" or "power skills" such as critical thinking, creativity, and leadership are gaining prominence alongside technical expertise, according to the report.

Companies consider skills as essential for adapting to rapidly changing environments and ensuring team success. With AI and ML reshaping industries, companies must address skill shortages through targeted training, certifications, and strategic hiring, said the report. "The race to harness AI is not just about acquiring tools; it's about equipping people with the skills to use them effectively," concludes the report.

The demand for AI and ML talent also poses challenges and opportunities for the sector with need for training and upskilling taking the front stage.
