Reddit, the widely-used social news aggregation platform, suffered an unexpected outage on Wednesday night, receiving over 50,000 reports. The company later updated its status page, confirming that the issue was resolved and they were monitoring the situation.

Downdetector, a site that monitors online outages, showed issues hit the platform around 3pm ET on Wednesday, with approx. 50,000 users citing glitches with the website and app.

However,  the company claimed to have fixed a software flaw that was preventing tens of thousands of Americans from using the social media site on Wednesday, Reuters reported.

Earlier, just before 4 p.m., Reddit posted an update on social media: "Yes. We're working on it."

The figure had come down to around 14,575 reports as of 4.32 p.m. ET.

"There was a bug in a recent update we made, but a fix is in place and we're ramping back up," Reddit said in a statement.

In addition to the widespread disruption affecting users across the U.S., the outage left many unable to access the website or app for several hours. Users reported difficulties logging in, posting, and even browsing content on the platform.

Reddit's team confirmed that the issue stemmed from a bug introduced in a recent software update, and they worked quickly to implement a fix.
