Karnataka gets record ₹7,000 crore railway budget allocation; PM Modi highlights southern development
PM Narendra Modi-led Indian government is committed to the vision of Viksit Bharat' (Developed India). To that extent, rapid development of southern states have remained a key focus. On Saturday, PM Modi reiterated the government's commitment to the development of southern states, including Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.
PM Modi was speaking virtually at the inauguration of three new Vande Bharat Express trains when he emphasized that the speedy development of the entire southern region is a priority.
K'taka's budget allocation up 9X, TN up 7X
Karnataka has been allocated over ₹7,000 crore in this year's railway budget, which is nine times higher than in 2014. Similarly, Tamil Nadu received more than ₹6,000 crore, a sevenfold increase compared to allocations under the previous Congress-led UPA government. This significant boost in funding is aimed at strengthening the railway network in these states.
PM Modi noted that such budgetary increases have already led to improvements in railway transport, including track electrification, station redevelopment, and the launch of high-speed train services like the Vande Bharat Express.
"Development of all southern states, including Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, is the priority of our government," he stated.
Expansion of Vande Bharat trains
PM Modi also highlighted the expansion of the Vande Bharat Express network. He said that Karnataka is now fully connected by eight such trains. The new services flagged off include routes from Meerut to Lucknow, Madurai to Bengaluru, and Chennai to Nagercoil. There are a total of 102 Vande Bharat trains operational across India, which have transported over 3,000 crore passengers.
"These new Vande Bharat trains will provide connectivity to important cities of the country. They will connect the temple city to the IT city, benefiting farmers, IT professionals, students, and pilgrims alike," PM Modi said. He pointed out that improved connectivity also boosts tourism, which in turn increases the income of local shopkeepers and businesses.
Beyond railway enhancements, PM Modi underscored the government's broader commitment to infrastructure development, noting that projects like the Amrit Bharat station scheme are aimed at redeveloping over 13,000 railway stations across the country. "Railways, roadways, and waterways development lead to the empowerment of the country, resulting in advanced infrastructure and increased employment opportunities," he said.
In a bid to attract long-distance travellers and enhance comfort, the Vande Bharat trains will soon get sleeper class.
"The speedy development of southern states, rich in talent, resources, and opportunities, is essential for achieving a developed India," PM Modi concluded.
