In response to the global surge in Mpox cases, Chinese authorities have enacted stringent protocols reminiscent of their Covid-19 measures, aiming to curb the virus's spread within the country.
Starting from August 15 and continuing for six months, all travelers entering China from regions with confirmed Mpox infections are required to declare their health status to customs if they have been exposed to Mpox or exhibit symptoms such as fever, headache, back pain, muscle pain, swollen lymph nodes, or rashes, according to news reports.
In a move similar to earlier Covid-19 precautions, customs officers will enforce medical measures and conduct testing for mpox on individuals showing symptoms or having known exposure. Additionally, vehicles, containers, cargo, and other items from regions with mpox cases will be subjected to disinfection protocols if contamination is suspected.
The National Disease Control and Prevention Administration, alongside the National Health Commission, has called on local branches to enhance cooperation with customs and other relevant authorities to ensure the swift identification and management of mpox cases, echoing the coordinated efforts seen during the Covid-19 pandemic.
The Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has emphasized that Mpox transmission primarily occurs through close physical contact, particularly during sexual activity, with a lower risk associated with daily interactions. Li Tongzeng, an infectious disease specialist at Beijing Youan Hospital, urged those exposed to Mpox or experiencing symptoms to seek immediate medical attention, a stance reminiscent of early Covid-19 advisories.
Earlier this week, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared Mpox a public health emergency of international concern, marking its highest level of alert for the second time in two years. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus highlighted the potential for further spread of Mpox within Africa and beyond, underscoring the need for vigilant global response -- an approach world nations maintained during the Covid-19 pandemic.
