Sydney Sweeney, the acclaimed actress known for her roles in 'Euphoria' and 'Anyone But You', has recently taken a stand against body shamers. The actress is currently preparing for her role as Christy Martin in an upcoming biopic about the boxer. In the midst of her intense training and transformation for the role, Sweeney has been the target of body shaming comments on social media.
Sweeney recently posted a video on her Instagram account, showcasing a series of screenshots of derogatory comments about her body. The comments, which included remarks such as Quite frumpy isn't she and Nothing to see here other than an average chunky Yankee girl, were reportedly taken from a Daily Mail article that featured photos of Sweeney in a bikini at her Florida Keys home.
In response to these comments, Sweeney shared footage of her intense workout routine, which she has been following to prepare for her role as Christy Martin. The footage includes shots of Sweeney flipping giant tires, lifting weights, boxing, and flexing her muscular biceps.
Sydney Sweeney's Transformation and Training
In an Instagram post on October 16, Sweeney wrote, Over the past few months, I've been immersed in training to bring to life the story of an incredible woman-a true champion who fought battles both inside and outside the ring". This was in reference to Christy Martin, one of America's most successful female boxers, who rose to fame in the '90s. Martin was the first woman to be inducted into the Nevada Boxing Hall of Fame in 2016 and the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2020. She was also the first female boxer to grace the cover of Sports Illustrated in 1996.
Martin's life, however, was not without its share of struggles. In 2010, she survived an attempted murder when her husband, James V. Martin, stabbed her several times and left her for dead. He was later sentenced to 25 years in prison.
Sweeney's transformation for the role has been nothing short of remarkable. She has been training intensively, and her physical transformation has been evident in her recent social media posts. However, this transformation has not been without its share of criticism, with some individuals resorting to body shaming.
Support and Anticipation for the Upcoming Biopic
Despite the negativity, Sweeney has received an outpouring of support from fans and fellow celebrities. Phoebe Dynevor, a Bridgerton alum, showed her support by commenting under the video. Other fans have also expressed their admiration for Sweeney's dedication to her role and her courage in standing up to body shamers.
Sweeney's role in the upcoming biopic is not just a testament to her acting prowess, but also her commitment to portraying the life of a woman who fought battles both in and out of the ring. The film, directed by David Michôd, also stars Ben Foster, Merritt Weaver, Ethan Embry, and Katy O'Brien.
