The Indian benchmark stock indices, BSE Sensex and Nifty 50 witnessed volatility and closed flat with a negative notewith oil and gas shares losing the most.

 The Sensex closed at 84,266.29 down marginally by 33.49 points or 0.04%, while the Nifty 50 closed at 25,796.90, down 14 points or 0.05%.

In the broader market on Nifty, most segment stayed in green with small-cap shares outperforming the rest with about 0.80% gain. Mid-cap stocks segment was marginally high while large-cap indices closed mostly flat. 

In sectoral performance, indices ended mixed with IT and media sectors gaining 1.17% and 1.60% respectively followed by consumer durables, metals and auto shares that posted modest gains.  Oil and gas were the biggest losers among the sectoral indices with 0.67% decline. 

The top gainers on Nifty were led by Tech Mahindra (TECHM) with an increase of 2.90% at ₹1,623, followed by Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) with a 2.36% rise to close at ₹3,168. Britannia saw a gain of 1.80%, closing at ₹6,452.15 and Infosys (INFY) shares climbed 1.62% to reach ₹1,906. Adani Enterprises (ADANIENT) recorded a 1.50% increase, end trading at ₹3,183.

On the losing side, IndusInd Bank (INDUSINDBK) led the top losers on the NSE declining 2.66% to close at ₹1,409.15. ONGC followed with a drop of 1.75%, closing at ₹292.4, Asian Paints (ASIANPAINT) saw a decrease of 1.63%, ending at ₹3,275. Bajaj Auto (BAJAJ-AUTO) posted a loss of 1.38% and TATASTEEL also declined by 1.10%, closing at ₹166.7.

A total of 2,874 stocks were traded in the market out of which 1,639 stocks advanced, 1,137 stocks declined, while 98 stocks remained unchanged indicating moderately positive market breadth.

India's stock market, the world's fifth largest, saw a 2% decline in market capitalization in September, falling to $4.90 trillion. Despite both Sensex and Nifty gaining over 2.4% and touching historical highs in the month. Sectoral weakness in IT, oil & gas, energy, PSU, defence, and telecom stocks drove the drop. This marks the second consecutive monthly decline.

 The Nikkei 225 in Japan surged 2.32%, closing at 398,829.63, Markets in South Korea, Hong Kong, and mainland China are closed for public holidays today, with China remaining closed for Golden Week celebrations.

NSE Nifty and Sensex will remain closed for normal trading on Oct 2 on account of Gandhi Jayanti.
