On Thursday, Indian Stock Market indices reached record highs just before the closing hour, following a day of mostly muted trading influenced by mixed global cues.
The BSE Sensex touched an all-time high of 85,247.42, before closing at 85,169.87, with an increase of 255.83 points or 0.30%. Similarly, the NSE Nifty hit a record high of 26,032.80, before closing at 26,004.15, up 0.25%.
The Shares of PowerGrid and NTPC surged 4.04% and 2.39% respectively helping the NIFTY close above the psychological 26000 mark, while banking shares HDFC and AXIS bank were the top contributors for BSE Sensex.
A total of 267 stocks, including Mahindra and Mahindra (M&M), Bajaj FinServ,NTPC, Hindalco, Power Grid, Trent, and TVS Motor Company, reached their fresh one-year highs during intraday trade on the BSE.
On Nifty the market breadth was negative as out of the2,874 stocks traded, 1,197 stocks advanced, 1,594 stocks declined, and 83 stocks remained unchanged. 135 shares hit their 52-week high in the index.
All broad market indices on NIFTY faced selling pressure, with mid-cap shares bearing the brunt of the decline.
On the sectoral front, Nifty Realty jumped over 66%, whileMetal segment rose by 0.43% followed by Banks and financial service sectors. IT (0.67%), PSUBank(0.87%) and FMCG (0.42%)segments lost most with all other segments were trading either muted or in red, indicating the volatility.
PowerGrid saw a significant movement on Thursday, closing at ₹364.2 with a high trading volume of 4,07,70,462 shares.Axis Bank also gained 2.39%, closing at ₹1269.15 with 68,53,324 shares traded. NTPC rose by 2.02% to ₹436.75, with 1,94,43,168 shares changing hands, while Bajaj Finserv climbed by 1.59% to ₹1935, and Grasim increased by 1.55% to ₹2660, both with relatively smaller trading volumes.
Top loser included LTIM whichlost 3.69%, closing at ₹6110 with a trading volume of 6,17,659 shares. Tech Mahindra dropped by 2.27% to ₹1600, with 25,05,756 shares traded. Tata Consumer Products fell 1.87% to ₹1189, while Tata Motors saw a decline of 1.36% to ₹964, with a significant volume of 1,29,59,075 shares. Titan also slid by 1.13%, closing at ₹3742, with a volume of 9,42,343 shares.
Most Asian markets closed mixed on Wednesday. the Shanghai Composite continued tits rally adding 1.16% or 33.18 points to close at 2896.31, while the Hang Seng in Hong Kong closed at 19129.10 points, up 128 points or 0.68%.Japan's Nikkei index dipped into negative territory just before the closing bell, losing 70.33 points or 0.19%, after trading marginally higher earlier in the day.South Korea's KOSPI Composite closed at 2596.32 shedding about 1.34% today.
