The Indian government is trying to transform India Post into a logistics company, which could ultimately increase the revenue of the entity by 50 percent to 60 percent in the next three to four years, the country's communications minister said.

Jyotiraditya Scindia said that India Post currently has the potential to take services to the doorsteps of people in rural and remote areas which could help it become a key player in the logistics sector.

India Post to Undergo Transformation

According to Scindia, India Post should transform itself from just a mail-delivering entity to a logistics player in the future.

"We need to transform ourselves from just a mail business and a letter business. We have got to look at route optimisation, and multiple sources to be able to transport our services," said Scindia.

Scindia added that the annual turnover of India Post currently stands at Rs.12,000 Crore, and the government will take all the steps to increase this revenue by 50 to 60 percent over the next four years.

BSNL to Expand 4G Coverage

Speaking at an event by the Public Affairs Forum of India, Scindia also noted that the BSNL is planning to roll out 4G services by deploying 100,000 towers by the middle of next year.

"With the tariff hikes, a lot of porting happened from other players to BSNL. So, my key challenge is going to be that after the network is rolled out, customer acquisition that we have done over the last couple of months stays with BSNL," said the minister.

He added that BSNL is currently working on a customer relationship management model, aimed at interacting with customers on a real-time basis and finding quick solutions for their problems.
