India is on course to become the largest software developer globally by 2027, which could significantly propel the economic growth of the nation, according to a top expert.

Speaking to Times of India on the sidelines of the ET World Leaders Forum, Microsoft-owned developer platform Github CEO Thomas Dohmke said that India will overtake the United States as the world's largest software development community.

He also added the rise of artificial intelligence (AI) has broken language barriers, and has turned the world of technology more inclusive.

"It is an era of great convergence. India is going to become the largest nation of software developers in 2027, and with the rise of AI and those two movements coming together, it will create a big economic opportunity for India," said Dohmke.

Indian Software Landscape Advancing

In a separate interview given to Business Standard, Dohmke noted that India's technological landscape has witnessed a significant shift after his last visit to the nation which was on 2008.

"There was no Metro then, and now we have multiple lines. The airport is phenomenal, modern and clean. I think that is also a reflection of what's happening in the software industry. There are a huge number of software developers already in India," he added.

Dohmke further noted that several Indian companies including Infosys, Cognizant, Paytm and MakeMyTrip have already adopted Copilot, an AI coding assistant, while most of these firms are also using Microsoft's AI services and products.

The developer community in India is projected to surpass its US counterpart, currently standing at 21 million, by 2027.
