Paetongtarn Shinawatra becomes Thailand's youngest Prime Minister

In a historic move, Paetongtarn Shinawatra, the 37-year-old daughter of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, has been elected as Thailand's next prime minister, marking her as the youngest person ever to hold the office.

Paetongtarn’s election follows the removal of Srettha Thavisin by the Constitutional Court on Wednesday, who was ousted for ethical violations related to the appointment of a cabinet member with a criminal record. Paetongtarn now becomes the second woman to ascend to this role in Thailand's history.

Her rise to power solidifies the Shinawatra family's enduring political influence, as she becomes the fourth member of the family to serve as prime minister. Her father, Thaksin, was a transformative yet controversial figure in Thai politics, and her tenure continues the legacy that also includes her uncle, Somchai Wongsawat, and her aunt, Yingluck Shinawatra, Thailand’s first female prime minister.

Beyond her new role as prime minister, Paetongtarn plays a crucial part within the Pheu Thai Party, holding positions such as Chief Director of Innovation and Inclusiveness, Deputy Chairperson of the Soft Power Strategic Committee, and Deputy Chairperson of the National Health System Development Committee. Her leadership in these areas reflects her commitment to progressive policies and health system reforms.

Paetongtarn's aunt, Yingluck Shinawatra, previously held the title of Thailand's youngest prime minister in over 60 years before her removal by the Constitutional Court in 2014. Now, Paetongtarn carries the Shinawatra banner forward, stepping into a role that brings both high expectations and significant challenges as she seeks to navigate Thailand’s complex political landscape.

Her election is seen as both a continuation of the Shinawatra dynasty and a potential turning point for Thailand’s political future.
